Location: 533 Ocean St, Santa Cruz, CA 95060 Hello all and welcome to another post! This will be the last post in looking back at my adventures while living in Santa Cruz and what a way it will be to end. Coffeeville is a small coffee shop that opened up relatively recently in Spring of 2016. The shop is founded by a husband-wife team who started their business from a small cart located at Boulder Creek and finally landed a permanent home in the heart of Santa Cruz. This place is really special and you can feel it when you walk through the door. You know you're going to have a good time here when you see the smiling faces of at least one of the owners and just talk about their coffee. Their bean flavors are the focus of the shop and you'll be thankful that they are so meticulous about bringing out the characteristics of their beans as you take your first sip. As you can see in the picture on the left, this place is really small. That's all there is to this space inside the store with a majority of their sitting on their wraparound patio. This place is like a cozy home where you can relax and have all your worries left at the door. All the staff are extremely friendly the times I went and the whole atmosphere is pretty mellow and intimate. There were few people during my visits to this shop and was able to just enjoy a quiet afternoon or morning while reading my book. You occasionally get college students meeting up here for study sessions or some writers on their laptops and notebooks making notes, but majority of their clientele seems to be coffee enthusiasts or people who just enjoy an amazing cup of coffee which we will talk about later. They have good amount of board games, cards, and some books for those people who want to do something when they are with friends or just need a break from whatever work they are doing. One time I took my girlfriend there when she came up to visit and I saw that they had a book on brewing and roasting coffee techniques as well as a section for baked goods that pair well with your typical cup of coffee. If you asked her, she would probably say that I had the dorkiest, nerdiest face once I opened it and started reading it. This is exactly the same mentality that the owners have towards their coffee and the way they prepare them for you. As I said, the star of their shop is the beans they use which they roast from their home. They are so inviting and willing to describe the characteristics of their coffee and are very beginner friendly. On their packaged coffees, they list the notes of flavors the beans have, origin, and when they were packaged to ensure freshness and maximum enjoyment. This place has everything that a coffee enthusiast would want to drink at their store whether it be a cortado, americano, macchiato, mocha, cafe au lait, you name it and they will be able to provide. Along with their espresso drinks, they offer organic syrups including their homemade dark chocolate or salted caramel (which is a favorite among their customers) that you can add to your drink. The drinks I favored at this place was obviously the cappuccino and cold brew. The cappuccino was just perfect in every sense of the word. The star of the drink is made prominent through your first sip: the espresso. You can literally taste the characteristics of the beans in their espresso shots which I find extremely rare because its easiest to characterize them in a normal pour over or french press. The milk is aerated just right to make it just the right amount of sweet and enhance the espresso. Man would I want another one of those right now. The cold brew is just more amazing. I didn't know at the time but their cold brew is actually brewed in the Japanese style named "Kyoto Cold Brew". This technique basically uses this huge glass tower that causes the water to drip through the coffee one drop at a time. It is a long, arduous procedure but the results are made apparent once you drink it. This technique leaves the cold brew more subtle and aromatic than your typical cold brew which douses the coffee grounds in water. This technique leaves you tasting more of the bean's flavors and less of the impurities that may come from washing it in water. What more do you expect from the people who want to showcase their unique style of roasting. Their cold brew is just divine and I actually don't mind drinking it room temperature to prevent diluting the taste with ice. I have tried several other Kyoto-style cold brews but none of them are as memorable as the one I have tried at Coffeeville. If you are in the area, this is definitely a spot you must check out if you have the time. You will enjoy your experience here. Atmosphere and Decor: 8/10 Coffee: 10/10 Recommend: Anything your heart desires. That's it for my journey in Santa Cruz! Thank you all for joining me on my trip down memory lane. Next week, we will bring it back to the LA area where I'm sure most of you live. See you guys next time!
