Aired: July 7, 2017 - Sep 29, 2017 Studios: Kinema Citrus Episodes: 13 Hello everyone and welcome to my comeback post! What better way to start off our return with the Anime of the Year winner for 2017, Made in Abyss. This anime was a dark horse in the category as no one really expected or even heard of this anime especially since the fan favorite, My Hero Academia, was also nominated in the same category. I guess only the biggest of fans and people in the industry knew of this anime since it was not available on any of the major streaming platforms, but on Prime Video! I'm going to be honest with you guys and I would have never known or watched this anime if it didn't win the Anime of the Year. After watching it, I can definitely tell why it did. It even opened up the plethora of anime that Prime Video has to offer, many of which are high quality. I highly suggest you all watch this anime so I will keep this post as spoiler free as much as possible. Let's head into the Abyss! Synopsis: The Abyss is a mysterious chasm that extends to unknown depths of the Earth. No one knows how deep it goes nor has anyone been close. The chasm is filled with many mysteries and thousands of relics that have been left behind from previous eras. People known as Divers dive into the Abyss's depths to uncover its mysteries and bring back relics. The story follows a girl, Riko, who is the daughter of the famous Diver Lyza the Annihilator. Riko aspires to be like her mother but is only a novice Diver restricted to exploring the upper depths of the Abyss. One day, Riko finds a mysterious robot boy (Reg) and brings him back to the surface. Having no memories of what happened prior to his discovery, Riko and Reg push themselves into the depths of the Abyss to help recollect his memories and to see the bottom of the pit for themselves. Along their journey, they start to uncover the harsh realities of the Abyss and the reason for its existence. Storyline: I love good story lines and see how the course of it develops as the audience progresses through it. Made in Abyss does an excellent job of story and character development where it leads you into parts that were unexpected or just skewed toward a whole different direction. To me, that is exactly what the Abyss represents. People may think that they know a great deal of its mysteries and theories of what one would see in the deeper depths of the chasm, but when you journey into the Abyss, unforeseen circumstances pop up that you could have never prepared for. The story development encapsulates that sense of uneasiness and shatters expectations of outcomes that the viewer may have been forming from previous experiences in similar situations. The beginning of the anime is light-hearted, almost to the point where you think that this may have been a children's anime. Shortly into the first episode, you get a glimpse of how dangerous the Abyss is even in its upper depths, but quickly goes back to being a happy-go-lucky anime. You even start to think that this is another coming-of-age anime where the protagonists learn to be self-reliant and grow up to be excellent Divers. Again, these expectations are shattered and as you continue to follow along Riko and Reg's journey into the Abyss, the darker the anime becomes. The Abyss is unforgiving to everyone and anything living within its depths and perhaps the story itself is part of the Abyss. This feeling of never really feeling safe and on the edge of your seat at the end of every episode makes you want to dive deeper into the story but at the cost of never recovering the innocence you had before diving in. That feeling is clearly what our protagonists are experiencing as they dive deeper into the Abyss. The plot and the world of this anime is so unique that it immediately stands apart of the previous animes that everyone enjoys watching. After watching it a couple of times, it became apparent that it did deserve anime of the year in my opinion. Others might still think that My Hero Academia got robbed, but Made in the Abyss had such a unique story that kept pulling you in as it progressed and I think that is what is important in being the Anime of the Year. An anime that pulls you into its universe and leaves you in a sense of wonder and awe as if you are living in the anime itself. I'm just thankful that I was able to binge watch the whole season and didn't have to wait for weekly episodes because I definitely would have gone insane if I had to (⌒▽⌒ゞ Music: As a majority of you know, films and shows can have spectacular writing and characters, but its the music that really ties everything together. The music throughout this anime is filled with songs that are solemn, yet lighthearted. Uneasy, yet comforting. Terrorizing, yet full of wonder. The video above is just a few examples of the music that is showcased in this anime. Listening to the music alone can give you the sense of what the Abyss is to the people in that world. A source of life, but can also be the death of you. The emotions you feel while listening to these songs are often paradoxical and I love it. The music does a perfect job of expressing the feels I was experiencing while watching this anime and it was a lot of feels to felt ʕ ಡ ﹏ ಡ ʔ Art: The art for the characters are pretty simple and not that outstanding in my opinion. The true art comes from the creatures and overall landscape of the Abyss. There are often times where music just plays and you get glimpses of the Abyss's landscape and the creatures that live within its depths. The world building that this anime has is on a whole different level that I have ever seen. There's little I can say to express the wonder I felt when I saw the panoramic shots that popped up every so often. I will just let the art speak for itself. There we have it folks! Our first comeback post in 2018! I can't express how good it feels to give some insights of the animes out there again for you guys. I had a couple of friends that would often ask me what good animes are there to watch. I often ask them what types of genres they are into before giving my input, and I want to do that with you guys as well. If you have any animes that you wanted to hear my thoughts on, don't hesitate to reach out to me on any of my social medias located at the right side bar at the top. I hope to see you otakuboos back again next week!
