Aired: October 14, 2011 - March 23, 2012 Studios: Production I.G Episodes: 22 Welcome back Otakus! I want to apologize for not making a post last week, but there just had things to be done and I attended a wedding away from home. Anyways, this week we will be talking about, in my opinion, a pretty underrated anime, Guilty Crown. Some of you guys have watched this anime, but I have met few people that had, so I felt like its a good idea to put more exposure on this anime. One thing I didn't notice about this anime that it has a R rating which I found kinda cool and understand why it was. This anime is jam packed with action and a good amount of drama to keep you watching in between fight scenes. So without further ado, let's go talk about Guilty Crown! Synopsis: The anime starts in Japan, 2039 in a post-apocalyptic-like world 10 years after the outbreak of the "Apocalypse Virus" dubbed as the "Lost Christmas." After this event, the country is basically under the military rule of the independent group called GHQ in their attempt to restore order. A guerrilla group called Funeral Parlor is the sole resistance against their rule. During one operation, Inori (girl) runs into the unsociable Shuu (boy) which gives him the "Power of Kings" - an ability that allows the individual to draw out the manifestations of a person's personality, or "voids." Shuu has to now unwillingly join Funeral Parlor and partner up with Inori to fight against GHQ and uncover the secrets behind Funeral Parlor, GHQ, and the Lost Christmas which will come at a great cost. Storyline: I know some of you might be saying "This is another weak protagonist who gains some ungodly power after meeting a mysterious girl to defeat the bad guys in the end" after reading the synopsis. In essence, that is exactly what the story is, but you know what they say, "It's the journey, not the destination that counts." That cliche saying can not be anymore accurate for this anime. This is a mature anime which means that there are a lot of dark undertones and sad stories behind the reasons why and how the members of Funeral Parlor joined. What do you expect though from an anime that's based after a major event that ruined society though. What I think about this anime is kind of like a cross-over between Eureka Seven and Sword Art Online. Some mysterious girl with strong powers meets a quiet boy where they are the strongest together and fight against a dictatorship while trying to discover the secrets behind a life changing event. If you love action animes, this anime has it all: superpowers, camaraderie, mechas, guns, you name it. Being that it's a mature anime, you get to see death and repercussions of all the fighting after the battles with dead bodies, blood, and tears lying around. Every battle has its purpose whether it be a military strategy or saving someone from the group. All the battles throughout the anime piles up on each other and helps develop the story and takes the audience one step closer to figuring out the secrets behind the events surrounding the Lost Christmas. Some people who have watched this anime say that it is a sad one with no happy ending, but you guys know me, behind every sad event, there has to be some message behind it. I don't want to give any spoilers, but this anime is all about knowing that there are things bigger than the individual and sacrifices must be made for the greater good. This might sound depressing but it's something that the Japanese culture value. Self sacrifice for the well being of the rest of the community is an honorable trait to have in their society, and I feel that this is what this anime is trying to tell its audience. I might be wrong in this, but I will watch it again to see if there's anything else. You guys should give it a watch as well and let me know what you think since it's a big controversy to what happened at the end since it was so vague. Music: Okay so my previous posts all talk about how the music contributes to the story and character development, but this anime just has the most badass music that compliments the action in this anime. "My Dearest" from the group Supercell is the first opening song for the anime and used a lot throughout the anime. The battle theme used often is where it actually hits the mark. This song is my favorite as it makes you inspired and get into the hero mode that Shuu often goes into throughout the show. If you're a gamer, listening to this song makes you think like you can do anything and everything while you play. I admit that I may have done some things I shouldn't have while playing Overwatch and died too many times because of this (⌒▽⌒). The rest of the music, especially during the second arc, mellows out more and reflects the seriousness of the storyline as more of the secrets have been revealed at that point. Overall, the music in this anime is just so badass and makes watching the battle scenes that much more enjoyable. Art: The artist in this anime are pretty detailed especially when it comes to the special effects and CGI used. They do a good job of showcasing the eeriness of scenes that require it but also know how to brighten things up in the episodes between the heavy ones. As always, I have to talk about the character design as it's my favorite thing to talk about. The characters in this anime are drawn to have their own personality defined. The voice actors and actresses also do a good job relaying their character's demeanor but the artists are the real mvps when it comes to showing what kind of person each member is. Not everyone has a generic model and there are varying heights and builds differing from the other characters which I appreciate. My favorite part about the anime art-wise has to be the background and particle effects whenever voids are being drawn out though. I have a knack for the subtle details that artists put into their work and I love to acknowledge the artists who works on those details. Without them, the scenes wouldn't set the correct tone and I feel that Guilty Crown does an excellent job in doing that. Alrighty Otakus! That was my review on Guilty Crown! Writing this post actually made me want to watch this anime again because I felt like I didn't get to appreciate it as much as I should have the first time around. Plus I need a change of pace of all the romantic type animes that I have been currently watching xD. If you have never heard about this anime, I don't blame you as it has been shadowed by big name animes sandwiching it, but I suggest you watch it if you have the time. I seriously think it's underrated and worth your while if you want to check something out that isn't mainstream. That's all for this week my Otakus. Thank you again for supporting me and reading my posts! See you guys next week where we'll talk about One Week Friends!
